The 8 Best Wreck Dives In Aqaba, Jordan

Need inspiration for your next holiday? The best wreck dives in Aqaba will not disappoint. Jordan is still quite unknown to divers, me included, until I had a job offer in this oasis for diving. I would like to help change that!

General Info

All of the wrecks in Aqaba have been scuttled (sunk on purpose), with the intention to protect and support the diverse marine biodiversity the Red Sea here has to offer. It does this in two ways, creating new artificial reefs and creating more dive locations (pulling divers away from the natural coral reefs). Fantastic news for divers, providing amazing wreck dives in Aqaba.

It all started back in 1985, King Abdullah II had the Cedar Pride scuttled, which has become a prominent site in the Red Sea. Since then 7 more wreck dives in Aqaba have been introduced. These 8 dive sites currently include 28 different sunken vehicles; including tanks, planes, ships, helicopters, just to name a few. All but 2 of these wreck sites have remained as intended; the airplane C-130 Hercules was hit by a storm, which destroyed the fuselage and the ship Al Shorouk slid to deeper depths, although still accessible for the tec divers out there.

Recreational Wrecks

All but one of the wreck dives in Aqaba are accessible from the shore (The Tristar is only available by boat) and located in The Aqaba Marine Park (AMB). Since all wrecks have been scuttled, they have been made as diver and environmentally friendly as possible, removing everything hazardous from them. That being said, always be careful what you touch (if possible nothing at all) as you can have a huge set back on the production of coral on these wrecks, not to mention possibly injuring yourself. The C-130 on the other hand has more dangers involved (as this was broken by the storm), still a beautiful and very easy wreck dive but you do need to exercise more caution.
